The Implementation of BCG Economy Model Thailand Turns Waste Into Wealth

Published on: Dec 23, 2025 | Author: Marketing & Communications

The BCG economy model Thailand is no longer just a policy vision. It is the country’s national economic agenda. Instead of abstract targets, Thailand is pushing real business cases that convert waste into value. Two clear examples stand out: sugarcane waste turned into bioplastics, and rice husks transformed into energy. These cases show how sustainability and profit now move together.

Why the BCG Economy Model Thailand Matters

BCG stands for Bio, Circular, and Green. Thailand applies this model across four core industries: agriculture and food, medical and wellness, bioenergy and biomaterials, and tourism and creative sectors. Together, these industries already generate 3.4 trillion THB, equal to 21% of national GDP.

The goal is growth with higher value. Agriculture employs one-third of the workforce but contributes only 8% of GDP. BCG aims to change this gap by adding technology, innovation, and smarter processing across the value chain.

Launched in 2021, the BCG framework supports a low-carbon economy while aligning with global sustainability goals and Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy principles.

Business Case One: Sugarcane Waste to Bioplastics

One of the strongest BCG examples comes from bioplastics. Thailand is the world’s second-largest producer, with 95,000 tons per year of capacity and plans to add another 75,000 tons. This growth is powered by abundant sugarcane waste, with over 40 million tons produced annually.

Instead of burning or discarding residues, companies convert them into high-value bioplastics. About 90% of production is exported, generating income while reducing carbon emissions. This shows how agricultural waste can become a global product, not a local problem.

Business Case Two: Rice Husks as Energy

Rice husks are another waste stream gaining new value. Biomass power plants now use husks from nearby mills to generate electricity.

A.T. Biopower operates a 22 MW plant in Pichit using local rice husks. In Roi-Et, Buasommai runs a 9.9 MW facility fueled by milling waste. Both projects benefit from government support for biomass combined heat and power systems.

Other projects go further. Glutinous rice initiatives upcycle husks and straw into biomaterials and energy while linking farms with tourism and community development. This creates economic, social, and environmental balance in one system.

BCG Economy Model Thailand and BOI Tax Power

The key insight for companies is simple. Align with BCG, and the Board of Investment rewards you.

The BOI supports more than 50 BCG activities with incentives that include corporate tax holidays of up to 13 years, full foreign ownership, import duty exemptions, and strong R&D support.

BCG-aligned bio-industries fall under Group A incentives. These offer 3 to 13 years of CIT exemption, land ownership rights, and visa benefits for foreign experts. After the tax holiday, firms may still receive 50% CIT reductions, especially in priority zones like the Eastern Economic Corridor.
