Travelers, especially first-time visitors, are reconsidering plans. Academic research supports this trend: negative safety perceptions significantly reduce destination loyalty and intention to visit. For Thailand, this means fewer returning travelers and a harder sell to new ones.

China: From Top Market to Shrinking Share

No country’s change in behavior illustrates this shift more than China. In the first seven months of 2025, Chinese arrivals dropped by a staggering 34% compared to the same period in 2024. Once representing 28% of all foreign tourists, Chinese travelers now account for only 13.6%. Annual Chinese arrivals are expected to fall below 5 million for the first time in over a decade—excluding pandemic years.

The causes are clear. Widespread reports of Chinese citizens falling victim to scams—including those trafficked into scam centers in neighboring countries—have sparked fear. “Zero-dollar” scams run by some Thai tour operators, where tourists are lured into buying overpriced goods and services, have long eroded trust. As legal action ramps up, the damage to Thailand’s image may already be done.
